Autumn Tips For Looking After Your Lawn

Autumn will soon be with us and the season of mellow fruitfulness is just around the corner. In the garden it is time to pick top fruit, clear away dead summer flowers and tidy up lawns in preparation for winter and next spring.
As temperatures drop and rainfall increases the growth of grass tends to slow down in preparation for autumn and winter. The lawn is still active albeit maybe a little slower and will benefit from feeding, weeding and regular mowing.
When feeding, look out for signs of weeds, pest and disease. Use professional weed controls to target difficult weeds like selfheal.
It’s not to early to start planning any renovation projects such as aeration, scarification and over seeding. Scarification or raking of the lawn will pull out any dead material, called “thatch” this will also lift up any grass runners so they can be trimmed by the mower. A springtime rake is the ideal tool for the job. These are all techniques used by professional groundsmen to keep grass in tip top condition.
Do not cut the grass too short, aim to keep it around 4cm high. Doing this weekly is quicker than mowing less frequently, as you will empty the grass box less often!
